WASHINGTON (AP) — With a nod to a colleague struggling with an aggressive form of Parkinson’s disease, members of the House saved, for likely the last vote of the year, a bill they hope may one day help stomp out the debilitating illness. The bill is named for Democratic Virginia Rep. Jennifer Wexton, who has the disease, and Republican Florida Rep. Gus Bilirakis’ brother, who passed away in May after a long battle with it.The legislation sets up an advisory council of public health experts and others in the private sector who will provide an annual report evaluating efforts to prevent, treat and cure Parkinson’s. Bilirakis and Rep. Paul Tonko, D-N.Y., are the lead sponsors of the legislation.Thursday’s vote was hardly controversial, passing by a vote of 407-9, but it was emotional.Wexton, now serving her third term representing a Northern Virginia district, has physically deteriorated so rapidly this year that colleague Jennifer McClellan, D-Va., read Wexton’...

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) -- “According to the American Diabetes Association, the total cost of diabetes in the United States was nearly $413 billion last year,” Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) said. “That’s up 27% over the past six years.” Sanders, chairman of the Senate Health, Education Labor and Pensions committee, said during a hearing on Thursday that the problem is only expected to get worse. “According to the CDC, the number of children in America with Type 2 diabetes is estimated to skyrocket by nearly 700% over the next 40 years unless we get a handle on that,” Sanders said. Lawmakers on the committee say addressing the problem is two-fold: bringing down the cost of prescription drugs and holding the food industry accountable. Dr. Kasia Lipska, associate professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine, told the committee that the rising cost of insulin has put some of her patient’s health in jeopardy. “These prices are absolutely outrageous,” Dr. Li...

Golf: In hopes of nabbing PGA Tour card, North Oaks’ Frankie Capan III has strong opening round at Q-School

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:34:57 GMT

Frankie Capan III had about the worst start imaginable Thursday to open the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School.He hit his opening drive into a hazard. That led to a double bogey on No. 10 at the Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. That’s not an ideal start in this event.Capan, who already has, at minimum, his Korn Ferry Tour card for 2024 locked up thanks to a strong rookie season on that tour,- has to finish in the top five with ties in this week’s 165-player field to earn his PGA Tour card. So spotting everyone else two strokes on the first hole immediately makes a difficult task all the more challenging. But, as Capan is wont to do, he recovered from the mistake and put together a solid round. The North Oaks native went 3-under par over his final 17 holes, carding four birdies and one bogey, to finish the day at 1-under par. That leaves him in a tie for 20th and three strokes back of fifth place with three rounds to play in the no-cut tournament.Capan proved ...

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:34:57 GMT

For months, Wesley Spearman has floated a proposal to rebrand Billy’s on Grand — a longstanding restaurant and bar that has recently drawn negative attention after frequent police calls — as the Gather Eatery and Bar, which he calls an out-with-the-old approach to a better relationship with the community around St. Paul’s Grand Avenue.A key turning point could happen next Wednesday, when the St. Paul City Council is scheduled to determine whether to issue the Gather Eatery and Bar its own liquor and entertainment licenses.Spearman’s efforts to revamp Billy’s have faced roadblocks. The liquor and entertainment licenses that his business, the DWD Group, currently use to serve alcohol are effectively borrowed from the official owner, Randall Johnson and the RJMP Group, who purchased the 380-seat restaurant at 857 Grand Ave. from building owner Bill Wengler and the Wengler family shortly before the pandemic. The Wengler family had operated Billy’...
