‘Rust’ movie medic gets $1.15 million partial settlement SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico judge has approved a $1.15 million settlement between a medic who worked on the “Rust” film set and one of several defendants she accused of negligence in the fatal 2021 shooting of a cinematographer by Alec Baldwin during a rehearsal. Court records show the partial settlement between Cherlyn Schaefer and prop master Sarah Zachry was approved during a hearing Monday. Schaefer told the judge there’s not a day that goes by when she doesn’t think about what happened, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported. In her civil complaint, Schaefer said she fought desperately in a failed attempt to save the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. She said the shock, trauma and emotional distress that followed has made it impossible for her to continue working in her field.Prosecutors dismissed an involuntary manslaughter charge against the actor and producer last month, citing new evidence and the need for more time to investigate.State District Judge Ka...

Fox Corp. dinged by Dominion settlement in third quarter NEW YORK (AP) — Fox Corp. swung to a third quarter loss, weighed down by Fox News’ nearly $800 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems. In April Fox News agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems to avert a trial in the voting machine company’s lawsuit that would have exposed how the network promoted lies about the 2020 presidential election.Dominion had sued Fox for $1.6 billion, arguing that the top-rated news outlet damaged the company’s reputation by peddling phony conspiracy theories that claimed its equipment switched votes from former President Donald Trump to Democrat Joe Biden.“We made the business decision to resolve this dispute and avoid the acrimony of a divisive trial and a multiyear appeal process, a decision clearly in the best interests of the company and its shareholders,” said Lachlan Murdoch, Chair and CEO of Fox Corp. For the three months ended March 31, Fox Corp. lost $54 million, or 10 cents per share. A year ago it earned $283 million, or 50 c...

Canada-China spat could sour business relations, experts say OTTAWA — Experts say souring relations between Ottawa and Beijing could affect Canadian companies in China, potentially tarnishing the appeal of Canadian brands for Chinese consumers. Companies like Canada Goose, Roots, Lululemon and Tim Hortons have expanded into China in recent years, leaning into Canada’s reputation as a source of quality goods and often featuring the red maple leaf in store and product branding.China is central to the growth strategy of many Canadian companies eager to tap into the country’s compelling consumer market. But retail analyst Bruce Winder says a diplomatic spat between Ottawa and Beijing could spur a “soft boycott” of Canadian brands in China. He says a pullback in spending on Canada-based brands in China could jeopardize the expansion plans of several companies.Tims China chairman Peter Yu said in February that the coffee and doughnut chain had 600 locations in China, with plans to grow to a thousand by the end of 2023.Lulule...

Breast cancer screenings should begin at 40, not 50, new guidelines say (The Hill) -- The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) on Tuesday released new guidance advising that women begin receiving annual breast cancer screenings at age 40, 10 years earlier than its previous recommendation, citing updated research."All women are now encouraged to get screened for breast cancer every other year starting at age 40, thanks to new and more inclusive science about breast cancer in people younger than 50 that has enabled the Task Force to expand its prior recommendation," the USPSTF said in a statement. The independent volunteer panel of physicians' recommendation was Grade B, meaning the task force believes with high certainty this guidance has a "moderate to substantial" net benefit.
